I'm always up to discovering new independent hip-hop bands because quite frankly, there aren't any getting the same exposure as the insane amount of hipster MCs deluging the blogosphere on a daily basis. Let's face it, the ratio of aspiring rappers to fans seems like a bajillion to one, but the prominence of hip-hop bands has clearly took a downturn at the turn of online marketing.
Today on Rhymehouse I came across a six-piece, jazz-driven rap collective from the Windy City called Animate Objects. The group released a free EP titled "Dubs, Grunts and Things" today on their website and after giving the short five-track project a couple of listens, I have to say that I'm enthusiastically impressed at the realness and passion they put into their music.
One of Animate Object's two MCs reminds me a lot of k-os and the group as a whole hints at my undying love for Crown City Rockers. AO's debut LP, Riding In Fast Cars With Your Momma, is something I definitely have to check out in the near future. Come to think of it, CD Baby is only selling it for five dollars. Sweet.
