VIDEO: NOVEL FT. BEN FOLDS, TALIB KWELI, & SPREE WILSON - I AM

Rappers are often stereotyped as one-sided tough guys with rigid personalities and "never back down" mentalities. People fail to realize that hip-hop's hardest MCs are also music's most graphic poets, and with every true poet comes true emotions.

Many of hip-hop's classic records are ones where rappers just surrender themselves to the mic, sharing their pain and misfortune through raw and biting lyrics. Songs like 2Pac's "Changes" and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony's "Tha Crossroads" are a couple of the most sentimental tracks I've ever heard and yet some rappers are still reluctant to expose their softer side.

New York beat maker Novel laced a genuine record titled "I Am" featuring Ben Folds, Talib Kweli, and Spree Wilson for his upcoming album The Autobiography. The song forces all three MCs to look at themselves in the mirror and honestly express the true colors they see from within. Ironically, the music video is completely shot in black and white because the evaluative meaning of their words is all that's needed. So who said hip-hop wasn't deep?
