What does it take to carry on a legacy? Illa J sure knows. The younger brother of the late legendary J Dilla, Illa J passionately vowed to keep his sibling's memory alive. Not through t-shirts, films, or posthumous CDs, but through teamwork. Mike Ross, founder of Delicious Vinyl Records, the label where J Dilla started his celebrated career, is now helping Illa carry on the torch. Ross recently gave him a CD of unused J Dilla beats that were composed in the late '90s. Illa hopes to use those tunes to create his own masterpiece.
"Illa J can write, sing, play and rap. Not just a little bit of each - he's really the complete package! And anyone who loves Jay Dee's music is going to flip out when they hear what his younger brother's been laying down," said Ross. "For over a decade these beats have been waiting in the vault for this moment. It's like Jay Dee made these tracks with an extrasensory purpose, so that Illa J could make this album. There is no question that this is exactly what they were meant for. These beats belong to Illa J, they're his birthright, and I really believe Jay Dee would be proud of what his brother is doing."
The album it titled Yancey Brothers and right off the bat the first single, "We Here," features J Dilla's sweet musical genius. The multiple talents Illa has been gifted with is evident here as he spits two dope verses in addition to singing the chorus. J Dilla changed millions of lives. Now Illa wants to do it with his brother, together.
